Hans Selye

26  January 1907,  Vienna - 20 October 1982,  Montreal

He was born in 1907 in Vienna. His father was a military doctor. That was the reason why they came to live here in Komárno as this town was a garrison town. He visited the high school in Komárno and followed the family tradition. He studied at the university in Prague and became a doctor. After that he lived in Canada, in Montreal. He was director of his own institute - Institut de Medicine et de Chirurgie Experimentale - from 1945. He dealt with the theory of stress and studied the causes of heart attack. He died in Montreal. The high school in Komárno is named after him. The so-called Selye Days are organised in Komárno every year in commemoration of the great scientist.
